FC Barcelona is a football club based in Barcelona, competing in the league, the highest football league in Spain. The club was founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss men, English and Spanish led by Joan Gamper, and played his first friendly match December 8, 1899. Originally Barcelona played against other local clubs in various tournaments in Catalan, but in 1929 the club became one of the founding members of the League, Spain's first truly national league. In 2010, Barcelona is one of the three clubs that have never been relegated from the top of Spanish football, the others being Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid.
Barcelona enjoyed a good start in the league, winning the championship in the first season of competition. In the period 1919 to 1929 "Barcelona" won the Cup five times and nine times Campionat de Catalunya. The club has not won the championship again until 1945. Previous three seasons had finished twelfth in Barcelona, which remains, in 2010, the lowest position of the club finishing. Barcelona has won five titles in the 1951-1952 season, becoming known as "Barça Five of Cups" (in Catalan: Barça Copes Zinc), and went on to win the league three times, the Copa del Rey five times and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup once in 1950. The club then went into a lean run, however, with only two league titles between 1960 and 1990. In 1988, Johan Cruyff was appointed and assembled what is known as the "Dream Team".
In 1991, he led the club to its first league title in six years and repeated the feat the following season when the club also won the European Cup for the first time. In 1993-94 season, Barcelona won the quarter in a row champion, beating Deportivo La Coruna on goal difference after both clubs finished level on points.
Newly elected president Joan Laporta is the appointment of Frank Rijkaard as coach and the signing of Ronaldinho in 2003 marked the beginning of the second period of sustained success.
In 2005, in Barcelona in La Liga was the championship, and retained the following season. In May 2006, Barcelona beat Arsenal in the Champions League final, coming back to win 0-1 2-1 the last fifteen minutes.
Three years later, the club beat Manchester United 2-0 in Champions League final in 2009, have already won La Liga and the Copa del Rey this season, becoming the first Spanish side to complete the treble.
In December 2009, Barcelona won the Club World Cup, also won the Spanish and European Super Cups, and so complete an "unprecedented six times."
The club won the league championship twenty times, twenty-five times Cup, League Cup twice, Spain Super Cup nine times European Cup three times, the Cup Winners Cup four times, the Fairs Cup three times, the European Super Cup and three times FIFA Club World Cup time.
